According to
initial determinations, more than 1500 people passed away in the 5.9-magnitude
earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan's Paktika.
U.S. Geological
Survey (USGS) first announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 6.1 but then
updated it to 5.9.
46 kilometers
away from the southwest of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan was announced
as a epicenter of the earthquake. The earthquake, which happened at 01:24 local
time, was strongly felt in the surrounding cities, including the capital Kabul.
The earthquake
was also felt in major Pakistani cities near the border, such as Pakistan's
capital Islamabad, and Peshawar. It was announced that the earthquake took
place at a depth of 10 kilometers from the ground.
While Afghan
social media users shared photos of the earthquake, some users expressed their concern
that the loss of life and property could be increased.
By now, there
has been no official statement by Afghan authorities about the loss of life and
property. In January, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake had struck Afghanistan's
Badgis province, killing 26 people.
