The death toll from the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province on Sunday night has risen to 1,411.
In a statement from Afghanistan’s interim government, it was announced that the death toll had risen to 1,411 and the number of injured to 3,124. It was also stated that 5,412 houses were destroyed in the earthquake.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Red Crescent reported that more than 8,000 houses were destroyed in three eastern provinces of the country, that many people remained under the rubble, and that rescue operations were continuing. Officials noted that the evacuation of the injured from the area was ongoing, and therefore, the number of dead and injured could change.
Officials stated that, due to landslides caused by the earthquake, some roads were blocked, but that the closed roads would be reopened to provide access to hard-to-reach areas.
Rescue operations continue
Officials announced that the search and rescue teams sent to the region after the earthquake continued their work in the affected areas of Kunar, where hundreds of people are trapped under the rubble.
They stated that teams were having difficulty reaching some villages due to mountainous terrain and bad weather conditions, and reported that in search and rescue operations in which the public also participated, the injured removed from the rubble were transferred to hospitals by helicopter.
