An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west of China. Search and rescue operations are ongoing following the earthquake near the Kyrgyzstan border in Aksu province.
The earthquake, felt in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, resulted in at least three casualties, six injuries, and the collapse of at least 120 buildings in the sparsely populated mountainous region of Uqturpan. Approximately 200 search and rescue personnel were deployed to the region, where temperatures dropped to as low as -18 degrees Celsius.
The China Earthquake Agency reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of two kilometers, and more than 40 aftershocks occurred until 8:00 local time. The largest aftershock was reported to be of magnitude 5.3
