What is cataract?
Cataract, which is known as a disease mostly seen in the elderly in the world, is a situation that happens when the lens in the eye loses its transparency and gets a blurry appearance. It causes blindness when it is not treated.
The main causes of cataracts are:
- Inadequate and unhealthy nutrition
- Lack of vitamins
- Unhealthy water and hygiene problems
- Desert sands hitting the eye and ultraviolet rays coming to the eye
- Obstacles to reach health services due to financial difficulties
- Insufficient health centers and doctors
- Congenital cataracts
- Head and eye traumas
Why is cataract so common in Africa?
In Africa, many people lose their ability to see as results of cataracts at a young age, hot weather, insufficient nutrition level and climate conditions. When the ophthalmologists and the inadequate treatment facilities are considered, many patients, especially in rural areas, are doomed to darkness without surgery. 1% of Africa, that has a population of 1.05 billion, is blind. Half of the 10 million families that are blind across Africa are suffering from cataracts. Only one out of every 2,000 people with cataracts in Africa can get treatment. In some African countries, this figure drops even more. 18 million people worldwide have cataract patients and the vast majority of cataract patients are live in developing countries.
How to treat cataract?
Insurgency is the only way to treat cataract.
When is the cataract surgery necessary?
If it does not allow the patient to meet his level of vision needs; If a cataract has developed due to an inflammatory condition in the eye; or if the cataract raises the patient's eye pressure, the patient should have surgery as soon as possible.
